French Government Backs Clooney Citizenship Decision

France’s government staunchly defended granting citizenship to George Clooney, Amal Clooney and their twins Ella and Alexander, announced in the Journal Officiel on December 27, 2025, after the family completed a rigorous naturalization process including security checks and interviews. The move followed their 2021 purchase of an 18th‑century estate near Brignoles, which they made their primary residence to escape Hollywood paparazzi and offer their children a normal upbringing under strict French privacy laws.

The Foreign Ministry justified the decision under French law allowing naturalization for those contributing to the nation’s international influence and economic well‑being, highlighting George’s global movie star clout benefiting France’s cinema industry and Amal’s ongoing collaborations with French academic institutions and international organizations. “They maintain strong personal, professional and family ties with our country,” the ministry stated, welcoming “Georges and Amal Clooney” into the national community.

The defense came amid criticism from junior Interior Minister Marie‑Pierre Vedrenne, who worried some French citizens might view it as special treatment, especially given George’s self‑admitted “horrible” French skills despite language lessons. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez countered by confirming he personally signed the decree, emphasizing the Clooneys’ distinguished actions and cultural contributions. Local mayor Didier Brémond praised the family as “simple and accessible,” noting George’s regular visits to shops and the town cinema as proof of his love for France.
